The Phoenix is a mythical bird that lives for 500 years and then dies and is
consumed by flame, raising from the ashes of the fire to live another 500 years
and repeat the process. Irregular troops were volunteers that came together
when called in times of need to fight along side the regular army. Most Ranger
units, Guerrilla, and Militia were considered “Irregulars”. So when a number of us
that had been members of clubs that had decided to abandon NCOWS decided
to band together to create a new group we decided on the name “Phoenix
Irregular Guard” as an appropriate name since we were coming from the
“ashes” of old groups and Iowa has sported a number of irregulars over the
history of the State.
